stereotyping

well we had a 2 lesson with a guest lecturer that came down to our college.I missed the first one but managed to go for the second set. Even though it takes up our Friday off day,but it was worth it.What really catch me with the talk the other day was stereotyping.I could actually relate to it because i get stereotyped a lot in class for being Indian surrounded by 99% Chinese student and always get the racist black joke on me.but its alright.never did take it too serious.but as for the part of what the guest lecturer thought us.It wasn't  joke around with the stereotyping that was held upon the african community that was taken as slaves by the western society. For a very good example the lecturer gave was about the Pear Soap ad.

I wonder what would they think about asians?

But in label to western civilization, they knew more hence they can do more.haha.But the stereotyping should had stop then and there.eventhough many parts of the western culture had accepted other culture, stereotyping and racial statements are still everywhere now, from what i have observe from the internet, its seems "fun" to make jokes about this

the stereotyping or racial statement was just put upon the black people but also towards other races as well:

well basically the whole stereotyping and racial statement to me is the whole matter of cause of misunderstanding hence creating disbelieves and hence war. Were somehow living in a state achieving modern are.with statements like this that holds us back from creating modernity. The stereotyping and racial statements should had been left back where it starts but yet we still bring it to day.But the funny fact that its widely used among youngsters this days, who and where would they learn this from?parents?grandparents?are these the things we should teach?are the still in the state of mind that there isn't equality among different cultures?.but the fact that we should educate the next generation somehow been overcome with the idea to make fun of it. example that kids or the younger generation tends to hold on entertainment so much.much of their information or inspirations come from watching television and surfing the net.But if movies such as below and information like this are on the television and the net,and it seems legit and ok to make fun of,would they know its wrong?

this post is specially made for all those people with your stereotype and racist jokes that was done upon me.Im not even mad, because to know that you have a weak mentality.

Modernism

well basically I had a very hard to differentiating Modernism and Modernity. Its not that hard, just forgot which one falls in which.haha

Modernism basically carries the meaning something that isnt from the norm. In art direction style, cubism, surrealism, dada and all.Let me give you an example from the Beatles. They were all 4 young man in suits playing their instruments clean cut hair and all, just like how the guys your parents wants you to date. But placing them on the sgt peppers lonely heart club band figures,we could actually see a sense of Modernism in here

where else for modernity i would really talk about Charles Darwin. Being an atheist myself I somehow to believe on Charles Darwin's Evolution theory.

Basically what C.Darwin says that human evolves from this to this:
where else most religions believe that we were sons of god.We came from god and the whole thing im not too sure about depending on ones religion. so basically this is moderity.

REALISM

Realism is REALLY a scary thing.imagine walking somewhere and see something that looks exactly like you but it isn't real?scary..

Basically realism is something that is almost similar or a close identity of something real. Its resemblance is almost very close to a real image or anything. This and all could basically be seen on movies nowadays such as

failed realism(haha)

THE UNCANNY VALLEY:
range of appearancesmannerisms, and/or behaviors subtly different from humanoidin an otherwise humanoid figure that may cause negative reactionssuch as fear, discomfort, or revulsion. 1970, Masahiro Mori, The Uncanny Valley.

Now these are the scary part.its basically the part where realism isnt fun and cute anymore, but
scary and real.Such as sex dolls,wax figures,prosthetic figures,and all.

But if we ever come across the uncanny valley experience,is the virtual reality a solution for us?is it there that we have to end up as a void to realism?

McLuhan

basically on this post i would just like to pick up McLuhans "medium is the massage" and relate it to things that i really like such as the beatles and john lennon. McLuhans medium is the massage/message basically means from my understanding is that the important part of a medium is the message it sents.not based on how or by what.for example, John Lennon and Yoko Ono  held two week-long Bed-Ins for Peace in Amsterdam and Montreal, which were their non-violent ways of protesting wars and promoting peace. all the want to promote was peace.and peace was the message. it wasnt meant to be how they do it,which is being in a bed for 2 weeks, many would think its impossible to spread peace, but relating it with McLuhan's theory it wasnt how they did its the message!

go to school for peace, or not go to school for peace. You can piss for peace – whatever you do, do it for peace- John Lennon

As for the Beatles,in their song All You Need is Love the message was LOVE LOVE LOVE!its all about LOVE.As a perfect example, the music video was done as the first live global television link for Britain.and the message was just simple.the opening song was started with the La Marseillaise which was the National anthem of France with the understanding of the hatred among Britain and France since war.By giving the message,Love and starting of the song by the La Marseillaise shows that love is all you need not war.it wasnt a proper or most convincing way to approach peace between two countries but as what medium is the massage as the message is sent despite of how it was sent

structuralism

this topic is actually one of the hardest topic for me to understand so far.but bit by bit i was able to hold of it.What structuralism means is how me collect and divide or group our thoughts or ideas. any possible way to form a structure.

Structuralism argues that there is no single true way of seeing or understanding the world - there are many different, equally valid ways of seeing or understanding the world
the key is that we are all shaped by our cultural background - therefore our way of seeing and understanding the world is culturally determined(took from the slides)
i took the following above from the slides my lecturer gave because it basically explains how the way i would want the readers to understand.anyway, structuralism came from 3 different angles which is Linguistics,Narratology,Anthropology.
one of the main point in understanding structuralism is by knowing what binary opposition is.which basically brings the meaning that everything has an opposite of it. such as magnets, the poles, male and female, good and evil, black and white and so on..

but there are parts that shows that everything isnt divided just like that.there is something in between

which really leads to me that nothing is divided actually, there is something inbetween that connects both parts.which also relates to post structuralism which brings the meaning that there isnt difference.
following are just pictures to sum up the whole topic.im sorry if i've mislead you, this is basically my understand of it.

intertextuality

what i understand from intertextuality is that something that has the same meaning from the orignial content but presented in a different way.such as movies these days, often taken from books which is a good thing as it somehow helps understand the message easier. Its a way to say that no text is independent  that all texts are amalgams or mixtures...

the amalgams or mixtures could be seen as a few ways such as a parody, remix, remakes, sequels, prequels that derives from the an existing original media or form.

a few examples such as.

apple and blackberry

apple and blackberry LEVEL-UP!

HARRY POTTER AND LORD OF THE RINGS BOOKS:

HARRY POTTER AND LORD OF THE RINGS MOVIES:

and as could be seen on youtube and movies nowadays, there's a lot of parody remakes which could also be linked to intertextuality

different forms of changes could be seen like from a movie later releasing the continuation to a game and so.
Lost the tv series
lost the game :)

but we could not conclude that the original form of a thing is the right one as the remakes or sequels or parodies are wrong, the follow could be interpretation of a person towards the initial subject. below are just random images i have that i think could belong in this topic

semiotics

what is semiotics?i always here the word semiotics from my history lecturer during foundation period,he's always saying."its very semiotic".never really knew what it meant until now.

semiotic basically means the study of signs and how they work to create a meaning it stands for.just basic signs,u see everywhere.

but to study signs or to know signs we need 2 important ingredient to make it workable i shall say, which is the signifier and the signified

signifier is the physical form of the sign in the 'sensorium' of the culture where else signified is the mental concept part of the shared language of the culture. we need both signifier and signified to process out the understanding of a sign.

example of  sign.
none of the image or matches what its written

the signs should really signify correctly to bring out a message and so that its not misinterpreted. for an example, ever wondered why a NO ENTRY sign is a dash instead of a cross which a cross or an X could really bring the meaning no or cannot or something negative.but why was it used as dash?
because its actually a negative symbol which carries out negative signs.if a X was used it could be meant as a plus sign or wrong direction.so usage of signifier is important.

but in the sense of signs.there are two types too, either iconic or arbitrary.iconic in a sense that something that looks similar or very close to the original thing and arbitrary is something less iconic or far from knowing what it is but has links to thing it signing of.

the image above could be said as sign that shows a condom and a gun where a gun could signify war or taking life where else the condom signifies making love.

EXAMPLES OF ICONIC AND ARBITRARY SYMBOLS:

and there u go.a lil bit about symbols as far as i understand. and have a look at the video too :)
